Discarded

Updated: Jul 13, 2021

My Major Production project for AIE.

Discarded is a rogue-like deckbuilder in which you play as a toy that fights other toys using card combat and gets to pick a body part from the defeated opponent and replace it with their own, which also replaces the corresponding cards in the deck.

The game uses a ton of robust and ambitious systems and was therefore quite the task to design.

I knew right away that the game will be compared to Slay the Spire, and sought to understand what was unique about our game and make it a pillar of our design.

The modularity of the body parts became the main pillar of our game.

  1. This meant that the cards for each body part need to play well with parts you take from other toys.

  2. It made us realize that the upgrade system needs to give a choice of which body part to put it on.

  3. Enemies needed to be designed with the fact that they currently have the cards that you take from them in mind.

My roles on the team as systems designer:

  • Wrote and iterated on the GDD.

  • Maintained the game's vision with the team throughout the development process.

  • Designed how I wanted the editor tools for cards to be built.

  • Created prefabs and scriptable objects for cards, enemies and stickers.

  • Designed the cards and their synergies.

  • Designed the enemy AI.

  • Maintained an up to date bug log with priorities.

  • Participated in daily SCRUM rituals.
